Preventative maintenance (PM) is a critical part of a business' maintenance management strategy. In fact, prioritising preventative maintenance can add value to your organisation.

Some of the benefits include:

- Reduction in equipment downtime.

- Less maintenance costs.

- Increased lifespan of assets.

- Improved workplace safety.

But to be able to optimise on preventative maintenance, it is useful to understand the different types of preventative maintenance, so you can personalise your PM strategy to suit your business.

Types of Preventative Maintenance include:

-Predictive maintenance

Predictive maintenance, also referred to as condition-based maintenance, monitors the condition of assets using sensor devices in real-time. The intention of predictive maintenance is to predict when an asset requires maintenance, before it can break down.

If utilised frequently and correctly, predictive maintenance can prevent avoidable repairs and equipment downtime, and as a result save your business a lot of money in the long run.

-Prescriptive Maintenance

Like predictive maintenance, prescriptive maintenance uses advanced analytics, machine learning, and AI to collect data on when the equipment is likely to break down.

However, prescriptive maintenance goes even further by offering personalise recommendations to act on, with the intent to limit the risk of equipment failure.

-Calendar-Based Maintenance

Calendar-based maintenance is the most popular type of preventive maintenance. It uses software, like Faultfixers, to set up a recurring, time-based maintenance schedule. This can range from weekly to annual intervals- it depends on your asset.

- Usage-based maintenance

Usage-based maintenance looks at how much an asset has been used to determine preventative maintenance checks, rather than looking at the amount of time that has passed.

Using a company's preventative maintenance software, meter readings are logged in, and when particular measurements are reached a task will automatically be created for a routine check.
