Tech Startup Work Culture: the good and the bad
Thinking of working in a startup company but don’t know if the work culture is right for you? Whether you are graduating from university, looking for a career change or thinking of starting your own business, the company culture and values are just as important as the job role itself. We will be sharing with you the pros and cons of working in a startup and giving you a little taste of the FaultFixers culture.
Firstly, the pros of working in a startup company…
- A passionate, creative and fast-paced working environment
If you are full of creativity, brimming with ideas and have an adaptable nature then a startup might be right for you. Working on multiple projects at once and adapting to different job roles from day to day is one way working in a startup allows you to learn a lot and challenge yourself.
- A lot of responsibility and independence
In most early-stage startups the teams are quite small, therefore each person takes on quite a lot of responsibility and authority in their roles. It can be high pressure and quite demanding environment. However, this would be great for someone who likes to work independently, manage their own workload and take on a variety of tasks.
- Good team dynamic and flexible culture
Building a great team environment is essential in a startup company as the team is usually small. This makes it much easier to create good relationships with co-workers as it is a more relaxed and easy-going environment. Startups also tend to have a more flexible culture with benefits such as flexible working hours, a casual dress code and regular team nights out.
And here are some cons of working in a startup…
- Too much freedom and responsibility
If taking on various job roles and getting stuck into whatever is thrown at you makes you stressed and panic at the thought of it, working in a startup environment may not be for you. Being able to work under pressure and manage your own time is essential when working in a startup.
Working in a startup can take up a lot of your time. This means at times your social life may need to go out the window. At busy times you may need to work longer hours, stay at the office late and even work on weekends. If this doesn’t sound like something you would be willing to do, a startup company might not be the best fit.
- Unpredictable and unstructured work
If you are someone who likes structure and organisation you might want to rethink working in a startup company. Workloads can vary from day to day and there may be little or no structure to your day. However, if you would like a challenging, exciting and fast-paced work environment then a startup company could be exactly what you're looking for.
At FaultFixers don’t get us wrong we are a passionate, curious and motivated bunch but we also love cheeky team drinks at our local pub on a Friday night. We feel it’s important to work hard but still have fun whilst doing so. Our values include being collaborative, innovative and having a growth mindset.
